RE: Winegard converter box for digital TV

I don't know what year your Excell is, but on our 05 there is an inverter behind the TV. It is turned on when you are watching TV. It has 2 outlets, only one of which is used. I plugged my converter box into the other outlet. Wayne, the oldcurmudgeon

This belongs to a friend of mine, the 5th wheel is for long trips and the RT is for short. RE: Trip Cost

We full timed for 13 years in a large 5th wheel then a class A. The price was not much different than my summer trip in a B. The big difference was fuel cost, but then the fuel was cheaper. A lot of big rigs spend time in WalMarts too. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Camper Van Video

That takes me back to when we owned a 63 VW camper, our first. It was great fun for a young couple. This summer while in a NY state park we saw a gathering of a few dozen VWs from a New York club, lots of examples, lots of nostalgia. Wayne, the old curmudgeon.

RE: Used Sprinter Van Sale?

I believe that DHL delivery people have a franchise and as such probably own the trucks. It may be possible to get a good deal from one of them. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

We saw this American Cruiser in Yarnell AZ Sunday after church. I think it is probably a 1999. Don't see many of these around. Wayne, the old curmudgeon http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk187/wsfurrie/Yarnell001.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk187/wsfurrie/Yarnell002.jpg

RE: Trip Cost

Gmctoyman, we drove 12,000 miles this summer in 123 days and spent $14.13 per day to eat out, very close to your total. We tend to eat a small breakfast and dinner and make lunch our big meal, mostly eaten out. Most restaurants charge less for the same meal at lunch and we find it is often no more expensive than eating in. Besides, we are on vacation. We would rather save money somewhere else. Once in a while we would get caught far from a eatery and would have to resort to home made MREs. Sounds like you had a great time. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid

The main reason for a flush is to change the fluid in the torque converter which does not drain out with a regular change. This can amount to several quarts. One can do it themselfs, it is easier with 2 people. The procedure is to remove the end of the outlet hose from the tranny to the cooler (assuming you have a cooler, either external or built into the radiator). Place the end of the hose in a large jar and run the engine for a few seconds, just long enough to pump out a quart. Replace the fluid with new and repeat the process. You are done when clean fluid starts to be pumped out. In my younger days I would do this, now I am too old and lazy, but it does work well, better with 2 people. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid

On the subject of tranny oil pan drains, I had a temperature sender installed in the pan of my Ford pickup. It required brazing a nut to the pan to screw the sender into. An added bonus was that I could use the sender as an oil drain plug. I'm happy to see this subject being paid attention to, to many people take the transmission for granted. B's may be smaller than A's,but that does not mean the transmission is cheaper to fix. Wayne, the old curmudgeon.

RE: Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid

Kenuck, you are doing the smart thing. I have known a number of friends who have had tranny failure due to not monitoring the temperature. You should be safe at 210, but it is getting close to the worry spot. I pulled a large 5th wheel with a Ford diesel for over 100k miles and had no problems, mainly I think, because I kept the fluid clean and cool. I think a tranny temp gauge is a must, just because it gives some piece of mind. If I were Seargent76 I would err on the side of caution and at least change the fluid. I ran Amzoil tranny fluid because it is more tolerant to high temperatures, but any good synthetic should do. My 05 Excell V10 does not heat up at all, the first one that has not. I have always had a large auxiliary cooler in the past but have not had to do anything to this unit. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Do you carry a tire inflator in your B?

Here is my 2 cents worth. I have had several over the years. The best was a small Craftsman 110 volt unit that I carried in a class A. It was too large to carry in a B so I went to a 12 volt unit. I have had a few cheap ones that either would not pump up a tire or burnt out, one melted. The one I have now is a Master Flow MF-1050 that I bought at Costco for $49.00. Amazon also carries it. It is a quality built unit that will pump up my tires to 80 lb with no problem. It is also handy for the air bags. One problem that I did find was that if I tried to turn it on with the hose attached to the tire and the pressure near 80 lb, the fuse will blow. Starting the motor against that much pressure draws too much current. I always turn on the motor before attaching the hose now. http://www.amazon.com/Master-MF-1050-Tsunami-Portable-Compressor/dp/B000L9AD2U/ref=pd_rhf_f_t_k2a_4 Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Traveling Southwest in January & February

Stay in southern New Mexico and Arizona. The difference is altitude, the southern end is much lower, ergo warmer. Albuquerque to Flagstaff gets snow, Las Cruces to Phoenix does not, this is the part that is full of snowbirds. For Texas, stay south of San Antonio, the rest of the south stay close to the Gulf and you should be OK. Have fun. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: My new washer UPDATE

I also have had one for about a week It is a bit awkward with the long extension on but gets the job done. Not too heavy. It comes with 2 brush's, one for painted surfaces and one for tough jobs like decking. In my youth I would have disdained such a gadget, but I am less proud now and will admit to needing all the help I can get. It did a good job on the hard to reach parts of our PW and will be handy around the house. Now I have to figure out a place to store it. It would be great in a zoo for washing elephants. RE: Battery Tender

Harbor Freight sells a trickle charger for about $15.00, often on sale for less. You would probably need one for each battery. I have been using 2 of them for 3 years on various vehicles. Also, if you a Progressive Dynamics converter in your rig you can plug in a Charge Wizard and it will take care of all your problems, less than $30.00 as I remember, great product. With the batteries disconnected they still should be charged periodically. I leave my rig plugged in all the time and the Charge Wizard takes care of the house batteries while a trickle charger maintains the coach battery Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: Post Your 'B' Sightings Here

Tour N, Yes it is a nice place. It is an Escapee park for those of you who are familiar with Escapees. It is one of the few that have deeded lots. The park as such does not have a WEB site, but one of my neighbors has the following site. http://mpmcfall.tripod.com/id2.html Here is another site that shows a view from the campground, this entire park was built by the members, roars, utilities sheds, everything except the homes. http://www.lightcurve.com/panoramas/?p=northranch Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: 6' Fridge in Plateau

It's too bad they can't offer it as an option. For every one of us who is satisfied with the small fridge there is someone who isn't. Wayne

RE: Me first and forever...

I hate to buck the trend but here is my take. All other things being equal I will take a smaller site. I don't need all the extra room and some else may. I have never been asked to move and my reply would probably have something to do with how I was asked. We don't need to start RV class warfare. Those people with bigger rigs are every bit as nice as people with Bs, and some of them are just as nasty. Wayne, the old curmudgeon

RE: RT190P Running 3 way Frig. out of level

The damage builds up the more you run it off level. It will keep working well until it gets to the point where the crystals block the fluid, kind of like blocked arteries. If you don't do it any more you are probably OK. It takes quite a bit of off level running to stop it for good. Wayne, the old curmudgeon
